Oamaru farmer Chris Black pursues a rare white pukeko

An Oamaru farmer has caught a rare white pukeko on video and hatched a plan to catch the bird in real life.

Chris Black, who runs a farm in North Otago, says he first spotted the bird a few days ago and has tried to catch it ever since.

The video shows the bird mingling with its indigo-coloured counterparts.

Mr Black can be seen creeping up cat-like on the bird, before it flies away to another part of his property.

The farmer told 3 News he has devised a plan to tire the bird out and then catch it while it rests.

Last month, another North Otago farmer told the Otago Daily Times that white pukekos had been born at his farm in the previous spring.

The Department of Conservation told ODT at the time that white pukekos were known about but considered “reasonably rare”.

We live in Oamaru as well and we have three of the white pukekos they are around a year old now, they were so cute as little chicks last year that guy should just leave it alone like we have and let it go and make more of thw rare birds.

What is wrong with this man? He thinks only of personal glory and not about the beauty of nature - leave the bird alone, ffs!
