Red-heads are being offered free coffee, haircuts and, of course, hugs as the third annual ‘Hug-a-Ginga’ day is celebrated.
Despite concerns the controversial day was providing another opportunity for red-heads to be teased, The Edge programme director Leon Wratt says the overall feeling has been really positive.
“There’s lots of love,” he says. “People are embracing it in the way we were hoping.”
Dominion Rd cafe The Ginger Room are offering free coffee for gingas, while Auckland hair salon Number 18 is honouring the day by offering free hair colours.
"If you book in for a cut, you get a free hair colour - as long as you go ginga or red," says salon manager Melani Olivier.
The offer is only valid for 'Hug-a-Ginga' day, but "if everyone is getting into it, we might carry it over till tomorrow", she says.
Gingas on Twitter are keeping tabs on the hugs they have received.
"I'm up to five. Slow start," tweeted one.
"Roaming the streets, looking for gingas to hug," wrote another.
