Redhead, carrot top, ginger, ginga, the stand out hair colour has carried many labels over the years, and now a group of fiery-haired musicians are uniting for a video clip.

It all started when Wellington singer-songwriter Jesse Sheehan won this year’s Smokefree Rockquest.

He and the director sought to make a video for his winning song ‘Brothers and Sisters’, when they realised they had something is common – their red hair.

Working on the adage you can never have too much of a good thing, the pair decided to go for more red heads in the video…and more, until the whole video was featured and created by gingers.

“I had my doubts, but it grew on me and I think it can be something unusual and extraordinary that people talk about,” says Mr Sheehan.

“Even if they hate the song they'll like the video.”

Director Ivan Barge says he used a variety of forms of communication to round up a crew of gingers.

“The internet, Facebook, Starnow, just word of mouth and street casting,” he says.

“Being a ginger it’s quite easy to approach gingers!”

The ginger gene is caused by a variation in the MC1R gene and is in fact quite rare.

The recessive issue means a ginger's main chance of making more gingers is hooking up with another ginger.

Some researchers even believe that redheads will be extinct by the year 2060.

In the meantime, a group of ginger musicians are banding together to create great music and a bit of a stir.
