The future has got a lot clearer for more than 1100 property owners on the Port Hills of Christchurch whose homes have been re-zoned from white to green.

Sumner resident Pip Watson is one of those celebrating the news after almost a year and a half of uncertainty, and says she is looking forward to moving forward.

“Now we can just get the ball rolling to get the house fixed which is the next process but this is the start,” she says.

But just along the road the news was not so good.

John Mcclenaghan, 80, had his house red-stickered last year, and today for a second time his rental was red-stickered. He says it is something he never thought he would go through.

“It’s something I never thought I’d experience ever, I've lived here all my life,” he says.

His home was one of 285 to go from white to red. One hundred and sixty-six properties are still zoned as white. Those owners will have to wait until mid-August to get an answer.

Potential rock fall danger is the problem for most, and cliff-face collapse for the rest.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee was apologetic, and says the Government is not trying to string people along.

“We aren't trying to prolong your pain or agony. We just want to make sure you get a fair go,” he told those still in limbo. “The situation for you is not as clear as in the other land decisions.”

Mayor Bob Parker says that he welcomes the clarity the announcement has brought for some.

“I'm really pleased that so many people of the city today have got clarity, for those who are red our thoughts are with you,” he says.

Those still in limbo face an anxious wait as officials work out how dangerous the rocks above them are.
