A 58-year-old Christchurch man faces firearms charges, but no charges relating to the killing of two cats that police found dead after an armed incident at his home on Sunday.

Donald Gordon Sloan was granted a registrar's remand without having to appear before a judge at the Christchurch District Court today.

He was granted a remand on bail to September 7 so that he could get legal advice on three charges of discharging a firearm in a house so as to endanger property, Christchurch Court News website reported.

The firearm was a 44/40 Winchester rifle, and the property was in Banks Avenue, Dallington.

Police attended a report at 4.15pm of a man firing shots inside the house and the Armed Offenders Squad turned out.

The man was arrested without further incident at 6.15pm and when the police entered the house they found a large amount of firearms and ammunition and the bodies of two cats they said were shot by the man.
