If there is a recession on, someone has forgotten to tell the world's wine drinkers. They have just bought more $900 million worth of New Zealand's wine.

Jancis Robinson is the queen bee of the world's wine critics and what she ways about a country's wine matters.

On her first visit to New Zealand 13 years ago she reported on the phenomenon that is our sauvignon blanc for a BBC documentary.

It is still our major earner in our near-billion dollar industry, but she does now sound a note of caution.

She says New Zealand is much better off than the Australians. Sauvignon is now their leading white group, but she says its too hot to match our quality.

But it is not sauvignon that has brought her here this time, but rather pinot noir.

Ms Robinson has visited two of the top regions - Central Otago and Martinborough.

Craggy Ranges is one vineyard whose pinot has just made headlines in London. The Observer says they are a better buy now those produced in the home of the grape, France's Burgandy.

Ms Robinson agrees - but only up a point.

However overall New Zealand is impressing the educated and honed palate of the influential critic.
