Kerry Bevin and Jack Gielen do not support Prince William's visit

By James Murray

Kerry Bevin and Jack Gielen are two of the main leaders within the New Zealand Republican Party and are both outspoken in their views about the royal family.

For Mr Bevin and Mr Gielen, New Zealand is not a democratic country while its head of state is an unelected royal, and they call for a constitution.

Do you agree or disagree with the Republican Party? Is it time to ditch the royal family or are they still relevant to New Zealand?

Republicanism is not the only passion held by Mr Bevin, founder of the party and former member of Fathers for Justice, he is also protesting against the treatment of men in the family courts and high rates of suicide for males.

In this extended interview the pair outline their motivations for protesting to 3 News.

In 1914 the view of most NZers that we were more British than Britain...we were falling over ourselves to go to war (it has even been boasted that we actually declared war on Germany before Britain!) For the likes of Ridley & Dave to suggest that we were somehow duped into participating in either world war by the evil, aristocratic Poms is utter crap! I'm no monarchist, but I really think we need to get past this idea that NZ has always had a rough deal. It wasn't just the ANZACS who suffered because of inept British leadership.

The British component in New Zealand life "today" provides a healthy objective eye on our political infrastructure. I do not feel New Zealand has the wings to fly on its own yet.

Im not a repuplican, however if a republic was a way of ending treaty settlements as we would no longer be part of the crown that would sway me.

Andrew. NZ would certainly have not been involved in the first world war.Which incidentally was an absolute disaster, due to the British aristocratic mind set. There is a possibility that NZ would have been involved in the second world war because of Japan. However they would not have entered until 1942 then would have been back to back with the US.Also under their own command. NZ troops are among the best in the world. They deserve better than being treated as a British foreign legion. As for financial cost every NZ taxpayer pays for the upkeep of royals and their constant globe trotting to exotic parts of the world. As for Nazis it might interest you to know that the royals you adore so much.Had more to do with the Nazis than you would ever know..

Dave, if you saw those uninformed, unwashed idiots being interviewed you would see the point of my reference to the Nazi street gangs. Blood is thicker than water and unless our transition to a republic had involved acrimony as in Ireland’s case, we in New Zealand as part of the English speaking world would have pitched in. Without a doubt.

We need all our tax money to keep New Zealand green with no crimes and corruptions..
The Prince should be spending some of his royal funds and not to take from the poor, NZ should have it's own real country royal family but Prince is welcome to visit and enjoy our greenerey donations welcome but not to stay or spent any of our funds as we need all our tax money for the above mentioned..
Great Britain need Prince William to solved all the crimes and corruptions in his own counrty as we prefer to have and to leave a better world for our future children to follow..

Andrew, exactly what makes you confident that we would've signed up to both world wars if we became a republic? Had we'd gone so far to become a republic back then our sentiment for the mother country would've eroded to the point where relations with Britain would've been severed down to the purely diplomatic level it is today. Holding onto a decrepit remnant of an aristocracy based primarily on sentimentality is crass, just like your laughable attempt to project the delusion of self-righteousness by playing the Nazi card.

I agree with Alien, and i think that before the new zealand public jumps on the bandwagon of becoming a republic, i think they need to realise we have a population of 4 million a GDP of around $115b, while we are still linked with the commonwealth the way we are we enjoy low to no tarrifs with other members. We don't have a big enough economy to participate on the global scale alone, so yes having the queen as the head of state is still relevant as it keeps close ties with the UK, and therefore the European Union. Its not like the monarchy interferes with the day to day running of the country and our costs for the monarchy per year is very low.

What’s your point, Leonard? Yes, we all have to attend to these mundane self-maintenance tasks and yes, we are all confronted with the reality of sickness and eventually, death. But the reality is we are not all equal in this life and nothing we do will make this happen. Some are cleverer than others, some have the social skills to work the system and some simply work harder than others. Even you have an obligation to strive to make the best of the opportunities that come your way and be less miserable when things don’t go right. And don’t leave your problems and issues to your creators to sort out - I reckon your mum and dad have done their bit.
