A request from New Zealand soldiers in Afghanistan to have spy drone planes was rejected despite their use by private companies and coalition forces.

The informal request for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) was rejected by Defence Force Headquarters, Radio New Zealand reported.

The Defence Force has been developing unmanned planes but they have never deployed them.

They are used by private companies in New Zealand to take photos and video.

A spokesman for Defence Minister Wayne Mapp told NZPA the minister had asked for an update on the deployment of the UAVs.

He expected to hear back early next week and to be able to comment by the middle of the week.

The UAVs had been around for awhile, he said.

NZ equivalent of a UAV, is a RC hobby plane with a camera attached.
Unless NZ has a real UAV, there is no point.

Get with the 21st century NZ Defence Force, the aging and outdated equipment you issue to our forces, make Dad's Army appear high tech.

Calling them spy drones sounds so sinister. They are UAVs, simply an eye in the sky so that you can clear a route without risking troops. Its just a remote control plane with a camera to see whats ahead before you drive it. Its not some magic human rights abusing, James Bond all in one flying machine of death and espionage as the articles title would have you believe. TV3s being sensationalist. Again.

Bad luck you just have to wait in line like the rest of us peasants, while more important people in nz get tax payer hand outs.
