A number of Wanaka residents have been forced to flee their homes this morning as fire crews battle a large vegetation fire.
The blaze broke out just after 4am and is threatening houses in Bevan and Islington Place.
Fire Service spokesperson Mau Barbara told RadioLIVE weather conditions are not favourable.
“The winds will still be strong up until about 11 o’clock today, so the problem is still precarious up until possibly 11 o’clock with strong northwesterly winds.”
Six crews are at the scene and they’re calling in backup from further afield, as well as DoC resources.
