While movies often get worse with each sequel, video games tend to get better.

This week’s most anticipated release is the Playstation 3 title Resistance 3, set in an alternative 1950s where aliens have invaded Earth.

Jon Paquette, who wrote the story, says “if you’re going to make a shooter you have to make sure shooting enemies is fun… and that's harder than it sounds”.

He has upped the ante with inventive ways for players to destroy the aliens, including one that “kind of makes them vomit, their heads explode… it’s a mature rated game, by the way”.

The first two games were a critical hit but what sets this one apart is a move to 3D.

Paquette says the 3D element “makes it a new game”.

“It really comes down to immersion – how involved you want to be in the 3D world,” he says.

Resistance 3 is released on Thursday.
