Ricky Gervais has confirmed he's considering resurrecting his role as David Brent in a one-off special for the US version of The Office.

The British funnyman became an overnight sensation after his hit show was aired in the UK, and made annoying office leader Brent an iconic TV character.

Although his series finished after two seasons, the storyline lived on in the American adaptation, which sees Steve Carell play hated boss Michael Scott.

There have been a spate of rumours Gervais would appear in the show, all of which have been refuted by the comic in the past - but now he admits the time is potentially perfect to make a cameo.

He tells UK TV show This Morning, "Well, all I said was that now they've found their own feet, they're are out of the shadow of the original, they are on 110 episodes, and me and (co-creator) Stephen (Merchant) thought we could write and direct one and thought it'd be nice if we could pop up. That's all that's happened. It might happen, and I'm going to put it to them. But it's not definite.

"I quite like the idea that Michael Scott bumps into this guy and takes him back to the office as the best bloke ever and the office goes, 'Oh my God, there's two of them.' It would be devastating for the people in the office.

"But that's a real success story, the American office, and I love it. I think they've done an amazing job."
