The rain which has saturated the East Coast of the North Island for the past two days is easing.
Roads closed by slips are being reopened, but now severe gales are forecast.
Slips north of Napier caused long delays for drivers and after two days of relentless rain, the saturation has made four-wheel drive vehicles a necessity – and escape difficult.
“There’s no way out of here and I don’t think there will be for some time yet,” one farmer told 3 News.
The rain will continue to ease tonight, but it’s expected to be replaced with high winds as the severe low slowly heads south.
