Robert Carlyle thinks it’s “bang on” the right time to make a Trainspotting sequel.
The actor portrayed hard man Begbie in the 1996 movie, which was directed by Danny Boyle and adapted from the book by Irvine Welsh. It also starred Ewan McGregor – who was lead character Renton - and Jonny Lee Miller, and followed a group of Scottish friends who were all involved in the drug scene.
The film was a hit and received an Oscar nomination, and after the release of follow-up book Porno in 2002 there has been speculation about a sequel. Robert would love to reprise his role, but isn’t sure whether it will happen.
“I’d work with Danny Boyle any day of the week so if it’s gonna be that, then that’s great. I think there’s probably a long way to go before that comes to fruition,” he told Access Hollywood.
“I’m 50 now, I mean I guess we made, it… [it’s] probably 15 years down line now. I think that’s about right. In actual fact, I think they are - I think Renton is 45-46 so it’s probably bang on the right time, now. We could do it now.”
Last year Danny said any sequel would be dependent on whether the original actors wanted to take part. Robert was impressed with the director’s comments, calling him a “respectful” man.
He also discussed how Begbie has influenced his life. The character is rude and objectionable and regularly gets into fights for no reason, and had a huge impact on the actor.
“It’s an amazing character and it keeps coming back to me. And people mention it a lot. So I enjoyed playing that, I enjoyed working with Danny,” he explained.
“There’s very few characters — unless you’re in a TV show [where] it’s great to have that arc over several hours. It’s very different to do that in film, you can’t do that in film, but this… Begbie, out of all the parts that I’ve played, is the one I would look forward to.”
