A former magazine editor claims he was prevented from investigating historic sex allegations involving former All Black Robin Brooke.

All Black Taine Randell stated Brooke would replace him as captain ahead of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, a year before Brooke allegedly had sex with a comatose teenager.

But Randell was forced to retract his comments after the scandal broke and the Rugby Union ordered a story about Brooke's captaincy to be physically cut out before the magazine hit shelves.

NZ Rugby Monthly's former editor John Matheson says the whole fiasco damaged his reputation.

Mr Matheson says his publisher feared the allegations would damage the magazine's relationship with the union.
