Rock n' Roll n' Roller Skating

I usually feel quite excited at 5pm on a Friday, but at 5pm on Friday June 26 2009, I was feeling exceptionally excited. I was on my way to be blown away by one of the greatest rock bands on the planet at one of the most magnificent venues on the planet. AC/DC at Wembley stadium!

It was a hot day in London, so a tube train packed with sweaty bogans was not a pleasant place to be. However, it was amusing to see everyone in black AC/DC t-shirts all reading newspaper articles about Michael Jackson.

Arriving at Wembley park train station the enormous stadium was finally in view and all around were rock fans marching up to the entrance with numerous Angus impersonators in school boy uniforms and lots of air guitar action going on.

Once I’d got through the ticket gates I made my way to the centre of the stadium. The support act playing was a British band called The Subways who had been called in as a last minute replacement for Thin Lizzy who had to pull out of the support slot when their drummer, Tommy Aldrige, broke his collar bone.

AC/DC came on stage after a huge screen showed a short cartoon video in which the band get trapped on a runaway train with devil woman train drivers. The stage featured a four story high train and the speaker stacks wore big red schoolboy caps with devil horns.

I decided that this once in a life time concert had to be experienced properly. So I made my way with a string of ‘excuse me, thank you’s’ to get within five people from the front of the stage. As the crowd surged back and forth I could feel my whole skeleton being crushed but it was entirely worth it to see these rock gods right up close doing their thing.

For a moment I turned around to take in the sight of more than 60,000 fans going absolutely crazy to the thunderous rock riffs of this legendary band. Impressive is an understatement. It took me a while to figure out that the red sparkling coming from up in the stands was from thousands of people wearing the red flashing devil horns that were for sale at the merchandise tents.

After the concert a nearby bar seemed to be a good place to wait for the crowds on the trains die down a bit. After ordering a round of beer I noticed that the doors at the back of the bar had been opened to reveal the most unlikely post-AC/DC entertainment …a roller disco!

Roller discos are making a come-back in London. The O2 stadium is hosting a series of roller disco nights in July with capacity for up to 350 skaters at a time. However, as this pub down the road from Wembley had decided to cash in on the craze, I was treated to the hilarious sight of pissed up bogans in AC/DC shirts wobbling around the rink as ‘Thunderstruck’ blasted out of the speaker system.

It was an unusual end to an unforgettable concert.
