Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O'Brien has chosen to receive his New Zealand citizenship in Hamilton.

He will officially become a Kiwi at the Hamilton City Council Reception Lounge on Wednesday, December 14, alongside 49 others.

“Richard O’Brien is international cult icon and we’re really excited that he has chosen to receive his New Zealand citizenship in Hamilton," says mayor Julie Hardaker.

"It will be a special moment, as it is for everyone who receives their New Zealand citizenship."

O'Brien came up with the risqué show whilst working at Hamilton's Embassy Theatre. A statue of him portraying the character Riff Raff in the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show currently stands where the theatre used to, on Victoria St in the city CBD.
