IOC (International Olympic Committee) president Jacques Rogge took part in a news conference in London.

The event came on the day that the IOC executive board voted in favour of the inclusion of several new events - including women’s ski jumping - at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Proposals for inclusion of slope-style events in snowboard and freestyle skiing and a team Alpine skiing event were put on hold for further review.

"Well, we need extra information about the capacity for the athletes and the spectators in the region. If you want to add more events then you need more slopes, you need more access for spectators and technicians and we have sent a team that is going to inspect this and make a full report on that.

That, of course, is of paramount importance because we would not want to have new sports stage the Games where there would be a problem with capacity of the slopes themselves. So, we are waiting for that and I expect a report probably by mid-May but I would not want to fix myself on a very fixed date. Then I have been interested by the executive board to take a final decision on the two remaining sports," Rogge says.

There was also no place for women's Nordic Combined in Russia in three years time.

"Well, obviously for Nordic Combined there is not the universality for the numbers to be considered as an Olympic sport. I can only hope that through the efforts of the international Ski Federations more women will participate in Nordic Combined but you need many issues for that. You need more competition, you need more international participation and hopefully the example of women’s Ski Jumping will be a catalyst for participation in that sport too," he says.

Rogge said that the decision of the IOC regarding the inclusion of new events followed a strict

"These events are definitely events that are attractive for young people. It is something that they love to do, it something they practice a lot. So these are upcoming events and we have incorporated them because we need for the Olympic Games to remain relevant with the youth of the world," he says.
