A mother and daughter whose alleged attack on Rotorua supermarket employees went viral on YouTube made brief appearances in Rotorua District Court today.
Eve Margaret Campbell, 40, and her daughter, Cherylly Junata Campbell (also known as Tapsell), appeared before Judge Jocelyn Munro and were remanded to reappear on January 26.
Eve Campbell is on bail but her daughter, who is presently in custody, is to remain behind bars, at least until her next appearance.
The pair are jointly charged with assaulting two men at Rotorua earlier this month with intention to facilitate flight after shoplifting.
Cherylly Campbell faces a similar additional charge relating to a woman complainant, plus an unrelated charge of the theft of a sander from Bunnings on December 12.
Eve Campbell's solicitor, Moana Dorset, took issue with the charges her client faces, saying there were no aggravating features because shoplifting had not been involved. She claimed the police prosecutor wanted time to review the file so more appropriate charges could be laid.
However, prosecuting sergeant Jim Groom responded that he was not committing himself on whether the charges would be amended but said the file would be reviewed.
Both women were remanded without plea with Eve Campbell being forbidden to go to either of Rotorua's two Countdown supermarkets while on bail.
The Campbells' alleged attack on Countdown staff was filmed by a bystander and uploaded to YouTube. Last week police said the public response this generated had helped them identify the pair.
