A Rotorua man charged with shooting dead his hunting mate in bush near Rotorua has admitted causing his death by careless use of a firearm.

Henry Robert Worsp, 37, admitted the charge in Rotorua District Court on Wednesday.

Rotorua mountain-biking identity James Dodds was killed while deer stalking in the Paeroa Ranges about 30km south of Rotorua, in September.

Mr Dodds was an accomplished mountain biker. Club-mate Dave Donaldson says he was a fun-loving, talented man.

His death was the third such hunting fatality this year.

Worsp will be sentenced in January.
