More than 300 runners are expected to take on the iconic Kingston Flyer train in a race today near Queenstown.

After operations were temporarily suspended last month due to mechanical issues, the historic steam train is back in service, making its first commercial trip of the year on Friday.

Runners from all over Australasia will descend on the area today to take part in the 12 kilometre race the train event from Fairlight to Kingston.

Race organiser Adrian Bailey says a mix of professional and social runners are expected to turn out.

More than 200 people took part in the first race last year, which was inspired by a similar event in Wales.
