A group of would-be brides dashed along Wellington's waterfront today, stopping to gulp down cake, throw bouquets and put on garters.

They were competing in a More FM radio promotion the ‘Running of the Brides’ and a $30,000 prize certainly makes wedding dress-clad girls run.

All frocked up but with sensible shoes, the brides-to-be looked relaxed in their preparations for the run ahead.

Then they were off, running to win a free wedding and honeymoon.

The first stop was throwing a bouquet over their shoulders.

Then it was a dash along the waterfront to the food to gulp down a hefty slab of cake washed down with a glass of bubbles, but keeping it down was not easy.

Then it was post-cake running towards eager groomsmen waiting for marriage certificates to be signed.

And finally, victory for Maxine Yee, as fiancé Dean Wawatai carried her across the finishing threshold.

They had planned to get married in Rarotonga in April but now they have just a few days to tell guests their plans have changed.

The prize means they will marry in Wellington and honeymoon on the Gold Coast.

And of course there was disappointment for others with some who struggled to get off the ground and over the line.

But not to be deterred, they think they will get married anyway.
