Russians 'too fat', 'have too much sex'

'Fat' Russians 'have too much sex'

A prominent Russian politician has called for restrictions on eating and sex.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the far-right nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, says Russians are "overfed and too fat", and die 20 years too young because they have too much sex.

Talking to a local radio station, Zhirinovsky said people should only be allowed to have sex once every three months, reports the Daily Mail.

"People have too much sex, they eat, smoke and drink too much and die 20 years earlier," says Zhirinovsky. "Everywhere else - in Europe, America or Japan - they live longer. Why should we perish?"

Zhirinovsky, who once challenged Boris Yeltsin for president, wants smoking banned except if you're home alone or in your car, and even then only with the windows up.

"Shut all the windows and get yourself poisoned," says Zhirinovsky.

From June, Russia is to gradually introduce smoking bans in public places and ban tobacco advertising and sponsorship.

Around two-fifths of all Russians smoke. It's not know how many regularly have sex, or how often.
