In Rwanda, 550 women die during every 100,000 births (AAP)

Rwanda has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world.

Five hundred and fifty women die during every 100,000 births - in New Zealand that figure is 14 for every 100,000.

Susan Crowther, a mid-wifery lecturer at AUT has recently returned from Rwanda where she assessed child and maternal health services for World Vision.

She spoke to Firstline this morning.
