The average Joe Bloggs could become the next Willie Apiata.
Previously anyone wanting to join the SAS had to be in the Defence Force for a number of years before going through the selection process.
Now, the public can sign up for the army and signal their interest in joining the SAS right at the start of their career.
Army recruiting director Major Helen Horn it doesn't mean the SAS has lowered its high entry standards.
“We then choose candidates who might fit a role within the NZSAS and invite them to a presentation, and if successful they can decide to train for the NZSAS,” says Major Horn.
“This is very rigorous training and if they decide not to keep going, they will pursue the other trade options they identified in their original application and they’ll continue to go through army training.”
Major Horn says “there is no intention that the NZSAS will be lowering its very high entry standards".
The first selections will be made in January. Applications can be made at www.defencecareers.mil.nz or by calling 0800 1FORCE.
