Animals are distressed by fireworks, the SPCA says

Fireworks on Guy Fawkes’ Day are something many New Zealanders look forward to, but they aren’t as enjoyable for our animal friends.

The SPCA says fireworks cause death, injury and distress to animals, and the organisation is calling for a ban on fireworks for personal use.

SPCAs throughout New Zealand have had to deal with an increased number of pets straying following Guy Fawkes weekend, which it says “invariably results in harm to animals and distress to owners”.

SPCA National Chief Executive Robyn Kippenburger says celebrations should be restricted to public fireworks displays.

She also says consultation should occur over the placement of public displays to minimise their effect on horses and stock.

A dog died in the Manawatu after jumping through a closed window, which has been attributed to fear of fireworks.

Ms Kippenburger says Guy Fawkes “is not part of our history or culture” and the suffering of animals is not an acceptable result.

“Guy Fawkes fireworks cause millions of dollars of damage to people, property and pets every year – damage that is totally avoidable.”

+1 for the ban, people who terrify my dog deserve a bit of hardcore terrorising themselves.

After all the dangerous antics I witnessed this year I wouldn't be surprised if fireworks finally get banned. They are being used as weapons, yahoos think they are funny when they shoot roman candles out of car windows into shops, at other cars etc. It is sad that some people can't see the reality that fireworks are an unnecessary nuisance. They can't be compared to swimming... yes a lot of people drown each year but you don't see idiots out there in the water deliberately trying to do harm to others. I vote for public displays only.

Animals aside - there were over 20 police in my area for Guy Fawkes simply to control the personal use of fireworks at the beach. In previous years it has been so crowded there that there has been injury/damage to individuals, animals and property. Australia does not allow sales to the public as it is dangerous in the wrong hands. It makes perfect sense to limit the fireworks displays to organised events and ensure that it is safe so that all can enjoy. The cost to the tax payer for the extra police, ambulance & firemen is not justifiable in my opinion.

Ms Kippenburger says "Guy Fawkes is not part of our history or culture”. Looking at her surneme it would be more accurate to say Guy Fawkes is not part HER our history but she sees fit to impose HER culture on US.

If fireworks or any other activity were only about harm we would ban everything from BBQs to fried Chicken. The death and suffering of millions of Chickens in New Zealand is totally avoidable, we could all become vegetarians! Millions of Sheep, Cows and who knows what other animals could live in peace and harmony if we didn’t eat them. So Robin Kippenburger’s position is ridiculous, if she really wanted to minimise harm to Animals she would call for a ban on animal farming. Furthermore if Kippenburger ever ate a burger she is a hypocrite. BBQs cause significant injury and property damage every year we should ban them. Swimming is another unnecessary activity, large numbers of people drown in New Zealand including many children we should ban it. Motorcycle riding, Rugby, Tramping all these things cause some kind of harm. If you just go out doors you cause trouble, everyone should stay indoors, but hold on what would be the point in living? Fundamentalists like Kippennburger are a danger to life, suffocating, maternal and parasitic we should eat them all!

On a daily basis I have to deal with dogs and cats defecating on my property. Wild cats spray around my house to the point where I can't leave my back door open. I have to put up with incessant barking from dogs left alone during the day. I've suuffered nerve damage to my arm after being attacked by dogs while walking. I have been repeatedly attacked and barked at by dogs while on my motorcycle.
For public safety all pets should be banned from residential areas.
Also, pets and other animals can be trained to not fear loud noises. Any animal that goes out of control because of the noise of fireworks reflects the failure of the animal's owner to train the animal properly.

I agree. Ban them altogether! They are being used as weapons and are very destructive. A 5 year old at our school was burnt and he has a huge weeping burn. The adult supervision just isnt there anymore. Stop selling fireworks waste of money and too dangerous.

This is hardly news, the SPCA have never advocated the personal use of fireworks.
