It is not often a movie comes out that unites an audience in both humour and horror, but that is exactly what Drag Me to Hell achieves.
If there is one director with some tricks up his sleeve, it is Sam Raimi. On one hand he does gross-out horror like no other - the Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness making a cult hero out of Bruce Campbell. On the other hand, he does hideously mainstream, like the Spider-Man trilogy.
“Usually in the films I’ve been making, ordinary people find themselves in extraordinary circumstances,” says Raimi.
Now he is back to the gross-out stuff, with Drag Me to Hell - possibly the best ride you will have in a cinema this year.
Even actors like Lorna Raver - who typically guest stars on shows like Gilmore Girls - found it ‘full on’.
“I was a little shocked, a little surprised, and thought, ‘hey, lets go!’” says Raver.
The premise is simple - nice girl Christine gets on the bad side of horrible woman. She is cursed, turning her into typical Sam Raimi fodder.
The movie involves Christine trying to escape being dragged to hell. Yes, it is disgusting and awful, but also ridiculously funny.
Raimi co-wrote the film with his brother 15 years ago. Ignored by studios, he went on to do the Spider-Man films, but finally Drag Me to Hell has its day to shine - and oh how it shines!
Drag Me To Hell is currently playing at cinemas nationwide.
