Just a week after Apple’s new iPhone 4S started shipping , Samsung has released its latest Android-powered smartphone, the Galaxy Nexus.

The Nexus sports the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, codenamed ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’.

The Android 4.0 software upgrade boasts a redesigned user interface with features like ‘Face Unlock’, that allows users to unlock their phone using the device’s front-facing camera and facial recognition software. The new lock screen also allows users to go straight to the likes of the camera app, so you don’t miss those crucial photo-ops. Users can also speed up and slow down voicemail message playback, and use tabbed browsing similar to the company’s Chrome interface.

Google has also redesigned Android’s phone app, and created a new people app that merges a user’s contact details and social networking presence.

Manufactured by Samsung, the Galaxy Nexus supports a new near-field communication service called ‘Android Beam’. It allows users to tap two phones or tablets together to share contacts, web pages, or other content.

The Galaxy Nexus Phone has a HD Super AMOLED 4.65 inch display that’s significantly larger than the iPhone’s 3.5” screen.

That said, the camera is just five megapixels, in comparison to the new iPhone’s eight megapixel lens. The Nexus’ Processor is a dual-core 1.2 Ghz, and it supports either 16 GB or 32 GB storage options.
