In his office on the Arctic Circle, Santa and his helpers are busy getting everything ready in time for his around-the-world journey on Christmas Eve.

Every year Santa receives a large amount of letters from children all around the world. Some have written long wish lists and some just want to find out more about the reclusive man.

This year the man with the white beard has so far received over half a million letters which have been sent to his own post office in Rovaniemi in Finland.

"So Santa is again getting about 600,000 letters, so it's amazing," said Riita Elf who works at the post office and helps with sorting the letters.

Rovaniemi has many rivals to its claim to be the home of the real Father Christmas, but the half a million visitors that come to this Lapland village every year know where Santa comes from.

December is the busiest month in the village. After a cup of reindeer milk, Santa travels to Santa Village to greet his guests and watch over his elves to make sure his reindeer are strong enough for the long journey and the sleigh is packed with presents.

Then, just before Christmas, the office will close and Santa will start his long journey.

Before embarking on this year's trip around the world, the bearded man wished all the children around the world a merry Christmas and called on them not to forget the people around them.

"My dear friends, I hope you will have a wonderful Christmas time and I hope you will spend it with your loved ones - with your friends, with your families,” Santa said.

“And if I may say one wish it would be: reach out your hand as a helping hand. There might a friend, a neighbour, a relative or a complete stranger who needs that helping hand. Maybe loneliness, maybe sadness, sorrows of life …whatever. Reach out your helping hands and I'm sure you'll make someone very happy. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

When the sleigh is finally loaded and his reindeer are ready, Santa begins his round-the-world journey in one night.

No one is quite sure how he does it, but for the lucky ones who are let into his office he reveals his great secret.

One theory is that he has a 10-metre cogwheel, a so called earth-rotation control device for which he has a regulating screw. With the screw he can slow down the rotation of the earth and therefore, the passage of time.
