If you were making your way home in one of the main centres tonight and saw an army of Santas running by, you weren't seeing things.

It was the second annual New Zealand Santa Race.

Despite being dressed for the North Pole even on a balmy Auckland night, it was still a good idea to warm up; and then, as the song goes, "you better watch out" - because Santa came to town in a big way tonight for the second great new zealand santa run

Hundreds of men and women in red pounded the pavements around the country, raising over $10,000 for Cure Kids that'll fund research into long-term illness in children.

"It's been great," says organiser Shaun Collins. "We've more than doubled last year's numbers for Auckland, and nationwide we've got over 750 people."

Some of the patrons at the bars lining the Viaduct might have thought there was something in the beer as the horde of St Nicks thundered past, and though every one was joyful, not all could be triumphant.

Santa races are held all over the world at this time of year. The largest field - 13,000 in Las Vegas, where else?

Making the silly season just a little sillier.
