Four years after missing a medal in Beijing, Sarah Walker has won silver in the women's BMX at the London Olympics.

Walker got a good start to lie second into the first corner but could not overhaul Colombia's Mariana Pajon won gold with Laura Smulders of the Netherlands winning bronze.

The 24-year-old Walker, fourth in 2008, only booked her place in the final in the last of her semi-final rides, but found her best form in the winner takes all final.

Walker dislocated her shoulder in April and had faced a race against time to get fit for London.

Her medal is New Zealand's 12th of the London Olympics.
