The Department of Labour has inspected a Bay of Plenty sawmill following a machinery accident which left a young man with serious crush injuries.

A 20-year-old was in Rotorua Hospital with serious injuries following the incident at the Red Stag Timber mill on Rotorua's outskirts about 8am on Thursday.

An Ambulance Northern Communications spokeswoman said the man had sustained "crushing" injuries but could not say to which part of his body.

Red Stag Timber's general manager Tim Rigter told NZ Newswire the injured worker was a contractor, but would not provide any further details on the incident until investigations were complete.

"It's only just happened," he said.

Staff were upset by what had occurred.

"They're all affected, obviously. It's something you don't want to experience."

The company, which has 250 employees, had sent staff to Rotorua Hospital, where they were waiting to get an update on the man's condition.

Department of Labour inspectors had visited the mill and released the site back to the company, which was also carrying out its own investigation.
