Anna Scarlett's surprise comeback from a stint on the beach volleyball circuit made sense today when she was named in the Silver Ferns squad for the Commonwealth Games.
Whatever the defensive combination it will involve captain Casey Williams who hasn't played with Scarlett since 2007.
Also returning are defender Leana de Bruin and goal shoot Daneka Wipiiti. Both having recently become mothers.
Wipiiti is likely to provide back up for the reunited ex-Magic pairing of Irene van Dyk and Maria Tutaia.
In line to win her first cap is 21-year-old wing attack Grace Rasmussen who wasn't fazed by a change in position.
With six games to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, the message from the coach is clear.
“We want to defend this gold medal, we' re up for it,” says coach Ruth Aitken.
The challenge begins next Saturday against Samoa.
