Mangere East Primary School was attacked at the weekend

Wed, 09 Jun 2010 7:07a.m.

The Minister of Education says arson attacks on schools have cost more than $30 million over the past 10 years.

Students at Kerikeri High school are likely to be back in the class room tomorrow after a suspicious blaze damaged multiple classrooms early on Sunday Morning.

South Auckland's Mangere East Primary school is likely to remain closed this week after a suspicious fire damaged seven classrooms that weren't equipped with sprinklers.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says any attack on a school is extremely traumatic for staff and students; she thinks the staff recovering from the two attacks over the weekend are doing well.

“I think the staff and the principal school leadership have done a tremendous job and they’ll probably be having pupils back at them by the end of the week – everyone pitches in and we get school started as quickly as we can,” she says.

In 2009 there were 45 suspected arson attacks on schools.

Common sense jim, increasing security may stop the millions of dollars of damage. It is stupid that our schools have not been equipped with sprinkler systems.

Why increase security? Send a message out to these "little bundles of joy" by sending them to an adults prison for a minimum of 4 years!!!
