A young Christchurch sports coach has received a payout from a Christian school which sacked him for being gay.

The 28-year-old man was hired by Middleton Grange School in February to coach a girl's netball team.

But he was later told by the school's principal that the board of trustees saw his homosexuality as a problem, and he was fired, the Christchurch Star reported.

The school was later required to apologise and pay the man a confidential sum of reparation.

The board of trustees had also attended a human rights awareness course.

Board of trustees chairman Andy Van Amyede would not comment to the newspaper, citing confidentiality.

The former coach said he was "very happy" with the resolution and that the board had attended the course.

He had since secured a coaching position at another Christchurch school.

a christian school being hauled over the coals for firing a gay netball coach? retarded. so now they have to employ everyone regardless of their sexual orientation or religion because it's against human rights if they don't? wouldn't that be discriminatory against christianity? isn't a christian school the same as a church? does a christian church have to employ gays, jews, muslims etc? he applied for this job knowing the values they stood for were contrary to his lifestyle. it was his choice so it should be his consequences. he chose to apply for a job at a christian school without giving full disclosure. if anyone should be hauled over the coals it should be him. oh but of course the school then wouldn't be able to deny his application on the basis of his sexual orientation. what garbage. it's pc gone mad i tell you. come people do you REALLY think he would he have told the kids if asked, yeh i'm gay but you know the bible says that (Leviticus 18:22) "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." ......sounds like a tui ad to me.....YEAH RIGHT

Anthony, first of all the Law was given to the Israelites, not the rest of us. Second the Law was done away with even for the Israelite because of the Cross and Grace. Have I suggested this man be condemned? No. HAve I suggested he be stoned? No. Have I supported the fact that the school was wrong to fire him? Yes. So how exactly do you presume I am a hypocrit? Ivan, Jesus was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God. That included everything.... even homosexuality. Is is by Faith, that it might be by Grace. A mans works, good or evil have nothing to do with being saved by through Cross.

The school should have been more focused on whether his coaching is up to standard not is sexual orientation. No wonder the christian population in this country is decreasing by 1% every year you guys need to catch up to the 21st century.

Well no matter what you believe the attitude that Campbell had was so one sided that he wrote everyone off as a bigot that did not have his opinion. Middleton grange School made the correct decision by not responding to the show as they made it into a one sided push for their opinion to get across definitely not objective.

Ivan, way to take a quote entirely out of context. Nice one. How about you finish the sentence of Pauls letter, rather than cut it short at the end of the verse. "And that is what some of you were." Of course the unbeliever can't inherit the Kingdom, you have to be born again as a child of the Father to inherit. You do not think all sin is equal? So what sin can you commit that allows a man to still enter into the Kingdom of God, or even into Heaven itself? How much sin can a man commit before God will refuse him? If your answer is none then all sin has to be equal in the Lords eyes.

Preacher and Ivan both of you are hipocrates you judge gay people because it says in the book of Leviticus that you have to "stone them to death" well it says in there you can own a slave. you judge gay people but say nothing on the bible mentioning slavery.

If I had daughters I would feel safer having them coached by a gay man than a sexually aggressive heterosexual man.

I'm glad the Board of Trustees were quite apologetic and attended a human rights course- maybe we should take note. I'm Christian but I wouldnt care if I was taught by a homosexual or atheist or whatever.
