It might be possible to practice some of their tenets in a more honest organisation, but as it is the Church of Scientology is unbelievably corrupt.
It's an extremely silly but tiny alternative religion with less than one thousand members, mostly based in Auckland. I do dislike its ridiculous anti-psychiatry posturing, but TV3 should be commended for its relegation of Destiny Church, the Exclusive Brethren and Gloriavale to the category of questionable authoritarian religious and political movements (a better label than 'cult.')
It is a cult. But cults are not much different from mainstream churches. Sure they are more aggressive with their unconditional love bombing, but that is because they don't get the tax concessions of mainstream religions (i.e. politically correct cults). How long ago were churches involved in the same antics.

Hi Sharon, your statement is proof enough that you do not know what you are talking about. This "Religion" is not a religion. Do you know what the Sea Organization is REALLY? Have your read their works? Have you read all their policies? No? then stop giving your opinion, and stick to facts. The biggest dup was that the people asked to Study "Scientology" were given less than 5% of its actual works. Because if they had been shown the other 95%, they would have labelled it a terrorist organization. Do your research. There is no more proof that the smell of a rotting dead corpse... and they are stacking up. Or the policy that allows them be stacked up (fact). Might be your grandchildren one day, and if they expand, it probably will be.
Cult is being far to kind. It's a fraud - exactly the same as the Brethren weirdo's. The Oxford Dictionary defines fraud as "Criminal deception, use of false representations to gain unjust advantage". That seems to sum them all up very nicely.
A church is not a bona-fide religion by opinion; nor is it a cult by opinion. There are prominent religious scholars who have already measured and studied the doctrine of Scientology and agree that it does indeed fulfill classification as a religion. We might as well ask is TV3 a real TV station? Yes, it broadcasts, but does it act with religious discrimination? Yes Does it fit in with Broadcasting Standards Authority rules; and I would have to say "No."
