A man who smuggled Australian scorpions into the country via Christchurch Airport has been fined $11,000.
Twenty-three-year-old Iszac Walters appeared in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon. He brought six live black rock scorpions to New Zealand on a flight from Australia in February this year.
Walters carried the scorpions in a film canister and then kept them as pets in Queenstown before authorities were alerted, arresting him and three others.
The three others who received the scorpions from Walters were sentenced to community services in Queenstown last month.
