Ewan MacDonald denies he murdered his brother-in-law Scott Guy

For nine months, the Guy family has hoped for the day when police would arrest someone and charge them with Scott’s murder.

But they never expected the murder accused was a member of the family.

In court today, Ewan MacDonald didn’t once look at his family. He didn’t speak. He hasn’t said much in the last nine months, but he’s always been there.

At the funeral in July, MacDonald was holding Guy’s coffin in one hand and his son – Scott Guy’s nephew – in the other. He then supported his wife as she paid tribute to her brother.

“Our hearts are so broken, and we will miss you every day,” Anna MacDonald read at Scott Guy’s funeral.

Ewan and Anna MacDonald were childhood sweethearts.

Speaking to 60 Minutes last October, Ms MacDonald had a message for her brother’s killer.

“How can you sleep at night, knowing what you’ve done, and ripped the family apart?”

In the months following the death, MacDonald took charge on the farm, milking with Scott Guy’s brother Callum and father Bryan.

As police turned to the public for help looking for lost Labrador puppies, and investigating arson and vandalism claims, they searched Scott’s property. MacDonald was working next door.

The accused is a Feilding local. His own brother is a detective with the New Zealand Police.

As the months went by, the family kept the public’s attention focused on their hunt for the killer.

“He’s just ruined our lives,” Kylee Guy said.

“It’s just absolutely ruined our lives and all I want is for Scott to come back and this person is just out there and is gutless. He can’t even come forward and do the right thing.”

The Guy family are standing by MacDonald. But whether they do so as the case against him unfolds in court, only time will tell.
