Police hope the Waikato River level will drop, improving visibility in the search for a 49-year-old man last seen jumping from a bridge three days ago.

Police divers on Saturday are resuming their search for Papatoetoe mechanic Hedley William (Bill) Pepler.

Mr Pepler was seen jumping 10m into the deep and fast flowing Waikato River from a one-lane bridge near Rangiriri, north of Huntly, about 3pm on Wednesday.

Searchers have so far found no trace of him, with poor visibility hampering efforts.

Police hope visibility will improve this weekend when there is a lower demand for power, which could see hydro dams upstream close, lowering the water level.
