Emergency services are winding down a search for a missing swimmer in Wellington's Oriental Bay tonight.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Coastguard have been stood down in the search for a man who failed to return from a swim. He was seen leaving his clothes on the shore and entering the water about 6.45pm.

The police launch was continuing its search up until before midnight but if the man was not found divers would take up the search tomorrow morning, Inspector Ken Climo said.
