Police are preparing to resume a search for an Auckland man feared drowned after jumping from a bridge into the Waikato River.

The 49-year-old man, who hasn't been named, was seen jumping from a one-lane bridge near Rangiriri about 3pm on Wednesday.

He was not seen to resurface from the deep, fast-flowing river.

Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley said the man hasn't been found, and "a high, fast-flowing and very, very murky river" was hindering search efforts.

Police would make a decision shortly as to whether to send in a police dive squad to search for the man, he told NZ Newswire.

The search would resume about 11am.
