Police are looking for a man who was seen jumping off a bridge into the Waikato River.

Searchers are scouring the river near Rangiriri for any sign of the man.

Huntly sub-area manager Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson says emergency services were called to the bridge on Glen Murray Road about 3pm today.

"A member of the public reported seeing a man park his car with the engine running in the middle of the one-lane bridge," Snr Sgt Simpson said.

"He then exited the vehicle, removed his shorts and then jumped in the river."

Police believe they have identified the man as a 49-year-old from Auckland.

Snr Sgt Simpson says the man was not seen to resurface from the deep, fast-flowing river.

Search coordinators are considering whether the police dive squad will be called in to assist with the search.
