A search for two missing people, presumed to have drowned in Port Waikato yesterday, will resume at first light.

The pair were missing after net fishing with a third man, who police described as a 42-year-old Polynesian man, who was found drowned on Monday afternoon.

The man's body was recovered but he could not be revived.

A large search for the missing two was mounted on Monday with a helicopter, surf club members, family and the public.

It was one of two separate drowning incidents on Monday.

An Asian man, aged in his mid-20s, drowned while snorkelling at Goat Island, north of Auckland, during the afternoon.

Police say attempts to revive him failed.
