A search has resumed for a 24-year-old man swept out to sea at a Wellington beach.

The man, from Porirua, was one of a group of four or five people who got into trouble in a rip at Titahi Bay about 4pm on Saturday, police said.

The others were rescued.

Teams from police, Land Search and Rescue, Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Coastguard and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter are conducting extensive aerial, water and shoreline searches on Sunday, police said.
