A 17-year-old man will appear in court today in relation to the murder of journalist Philip Cottrell.

Cottrell, a 43-year-old Radio New Zealand bulletin editor, died after he was attacked in Wellington's Boulcott Street. The attack took place two weeks ago when he was walking home from his Sunday nightshift.

The 17-year-old man, who has name suppression, is jointly charged over the murder of Cottrell along with Nicho Waipuka.

Waipuka appeared in court yesterday, and will remain in custody for the Christmas and New Year period.

Waipuka looked to be happy in court, mouthing "I love you" to supporters in the public gallery.

The NZ Herald reported he was seen giving the fingers to the police prosecutor before Judge Stephen Harrop appeared.

Images of the two accused cannot be published.
