Six month old Serenity Jay Scott was an advanced baby – she  had learned to crawl early, impressing the Plunket nurse.

Then, three months ago, baby Serenity died from violent injuries.

Every five weeks in New Zealand, a child is killed by a family member.

Last year there were more than 21,000 confirmed cases of child abuse investigated by child, youth and family.

Sadly the story sounds familiar in other ways too.

Police have interviewed many people but no one has been charged over Serenity's death.

So what happened?

For the first time since her daughter's death, Serenity's mother Chelsea Scott and her partner Matt Ellery have talked to the media.

Our reporter Helen Vaughan met with them both in their home.

I Dont understand why the police havent charged the 3 of them with at least accessorie to the murder and at least they would be in prison and I am sure the truth would come out very quickly in a prison enviroment where it is not tolerated by any harden crimminal to hurt a child little lone murder a defenceless baby, rather than seeing them on T.V denying all knowledge but the facts are there was only 3 people in the house at the time of the injuries/murder. Fact" the day you meet Matt he moved in your house with you and within 4 weeks later your bady is dead, and you have the gore to be on national television and say you really know him? I say lock the 3 of you up in jail and let the system take care of you

You barley know this girl and you only meet serenity once. How do you justify that she was a good mum when you didnt know her and when her son had previously been taken off her for neglect. And as for her up-bringing, you raised her mother so what does that say about you and the way you raised chelsea's mum.
Yes i have heard about you. This cycle did not begin with chelsea's parents. Are you woman enough to stand up and say you did wrong or are you just going to stand in the background and point the finger.

@ nana... how can you say that what all the comments are rubbish when what has been said from most of them is about what was said by Chelsea and Matt on the Campbell show as for her background all that tells me is you would think that she would want her children to have everything that she did not in her childhood as in a safe and loving home i can say i am not perfact but i can also say like justice said i know where my children are and who they are with. i also live in a sizeable house and can hear my child (6months)cry when she wakes up from her nap from anywhere in the house without a montor you can not tell me that the both of them did not hear a thing when this happened to a child that could not fight for herself a job that is for the mother to do.and just to end this note if Chelsea and Matt did not want this kind of feedback they should not have gone on tv
