An early morning fire that destroyed a service station in a small Waikato town is being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Jas Kelly Motors in Mangakino, 35km southwest of Tokoroa, about 3am this morning.

The fire caused extensive damaged to the garage and its workshop.

Police and fire service investigators will begin a scene examination when possible, which is expected to take a few days to complete.

"Until the outcome of the scene examination and any related inquiry work is known, the fire will be treated as suspicious," Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce says.

The fire is the second in seven months at a service station in the area.

In July, the Whakamaru Gasoline Alley service station was destroyed in a deliberately lit blaze.
