Sevens fans were largely well-behaved on the first day of the two-day tournament yesterday, with 28 people arrested at Wellington's Westpac Stadium for minor offences, including fighting and disorder, police say.

A further 82 people were ejected from the stadium, which was packed to the brim with fans in all manner of costumes, including superheroes, Cookie Monsters, astronauts and Na'vi, from the blockbuster film Avatar.

Sevens operations commander Inspector Simon Perry said there would be a larger police and security presence at the stadium today, and a harder line would be taken on refusing drunk people entry.

A number of Sevens fans told The Dominion Post they'd had no trouble sneaking alcohol into the event, with one woman saying many in her group of 30 smuggled spirits in water bottles.

Mr Perry said police were pleased with behaviour in the central city after yesterday's Sevens, although a further 28 people were arrested in the city for offences including liquor ban breaches, fighting, disorder and outstanding arrest warrants.

No serious incidents had been reported, he said.
