Guy Ritchie takes aim with his Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels at the legend of Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock and his Dr Watson are dragged kicking and screaming into the here-and-now courtesy of Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law, with a story firmly rooted in Ye Olde Londontown.

My over-riding feeling as I watched the final credits roll was disappointment as I tried to unravel the real Sherlock Holmes mystery of why this movie failed to excite me.

Great cast, plenty going on, and I do love a bit of Guy Ritchie. So I suspect I may have to blame a script that was just trying to be a little too clever for its own good.

No matter, it'll still haul in the crowds this Boxing Day.

Three stars.

Full marks for set design, props dept, location. The recreatation of London was worth the price of admission. However the interpretation of Holmes as a characcter with James Bond type abilities goes too hard against the grain of the original. Watson ditto. Sorry, but no.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is probably rotating in his grave at an unprecendented rate. Under no stretch of the imagination was Sherlock Holmes a so called "action hero"", and with all due respects why in the world didn't they use one of the many brilliant actors to play Holmes. Downey is ok but his stiff monotone English accent was very wearing and flattened his lines.

It is a shame that Guy Ritchie and the writers were not given a copy of Doyle's works to study.

Very disappointed as I am a great Holmes Fan.
