Guy Ritchie takes aim with his Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels at the legend of Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock and his Dr Watson are dragged kicking and screaming into the here-and-now courtesy of Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law, with a story firmly rooted in Ye Olde Londontown.
My over-riding feeling as I watched the final credits roll was disappointment as I tried to unravel the real Sherlock Holmes mystery of why this movie failed to excite me.
Great cast, plenty going on, and I do love a bit of Guy Ritchie. So I suspect I may have to blame a script that was just trying to be a little too clever for its own good.
No matter, it'll still haul in the crowds this Boxing Day.
Three stars.
