The trial of three men and a woman charged with a shocking list of child abuse offences has begun in the Wellington High Court.
Many of the details from the case have been suppressed, including the identity of those involved. That is because the eight victims were the children of two of the accused.
The accused have all pleaded not guilty to the horrific list of charges, which included:
- rape
- the forced feeding of snails and spiders to the children while they were tied up
- sexual violation with a knife
- assault with a hammer
- being tied to a rotary clothesline and being swung around
- neglect.
The alleged crimes took place over four years at the 42-year-old woman's Porirua home, where others would be invited to join in the offending during 24-hour-long drinking sessions.
The court heard the father of the children wasn't supposed to be at the property because of previous sexual offending and that the children have suffered emotional and educational development problems because they were denied the basics of care.
The eight children are now aged between 13 and two and are now under the supervision of a Child, Youth and Family carer.
The trial is set down for three weeks.
