Aucklanders out shopping in the swanky suburb of Newmarket today ditched their purchases and jumped on three alleged robbers, foiling their getaway.

Police say the trio went into the Footlocker shoe store and made off with a number of jackets and running shoes.

Things turned chaotic in the main street, Broadway, when the three rammed their way through traffic, hitting two cars.

Witnesses say a cyclist and two others stopped them getting away.

Police say one man fled the scene, but thanks to the public two alleged offenders are now in custody.

The citizens who helped catch these crims each deserve a medal. They didn't have to do what they did. They could have easily carried on and left the poor shop assistant of the Foot Locker to cope on his/her own. So well done to all those who helped catch the offenders.I think these crims have learnt a lesson of "don't mess with anyone."
